Excercise Groups
Sensorial exercise were designed by Montessori to cover every quality that can be perceived by the sensessuch as size ,shape,composition texture,loudness or softness ,matching ,weight ,temperature,etc. Because the exercises cover such a wide range of senses ,Montessori categorized the Exercise into nine different groups ,visual,Chromatic Tactile , Baric Thermic Auditory Olfactory Gustatory and Stereognostic.
Visual Sense
In the Visual Senses Exercise the child learns how to visually discriminate differences between similar objects and differing objects.
The visual senses is interpreted by the eyes .it is what you can see .Exercises develop this sense by requining the eye to perceive difference in size ,form and color
Size materials include the
.Pink tower
.Brown Prisms
.Red rods
.Knobbed and Knobless Cylinders which are graded by size.
.Materials teaching from include the geometric solids and the geometric cabinet.
Chromatic Sense
Montessori isolated the chromatic sense with her colour tablet activities .children first distinguish between primary colour then secondary and finally the various gradations of each.
The Stereognostic or Tactile-Muscular sense
In the stereognostic sense exercise the child learns to feel objects and make recognitions based on what he feels.Montessori recognized that while the eye can preceive differences in size and form .the understanding is heightened when the hand is also engaged.
